Penn Commercial’s Vanessa Penn and Rachael Jackson were delighted to be introduced to The Suffolk Punch Trust’s newest addition, two-month-old foal Colony Leonard, and his proud mother, Colony Gigi II, on 6th May 2025.
The Trust welcomed Leonard in March this year, and he is making encouraging progress, after a shaky start; Gigi initially struggled with motherhood, but has now learned to be a protective and attentive mother.
Colony Leonard is the first foal born at the Trust this year, with four more on the way, making 2025 a good year for the breed.
Penn has supported The Suffolk Punch Trust as its corporate charity since 2022, with annual donations based on the numbers of lettings and sales it has transacted.
Vanessa Penn, Managing Director of Penn Commercial, said:
“The Suffolk Punch horse is one of the emblems of our county, and we are proud to support The Suffolk Punch Trust’s important work in preserving this historic heavy-horse breed for generations to come.
“With four new foals expected in 2025, and forthcoming appearances at the Suffolk Show and Framlingham Horse Show, the Trust continues to go from strength to strength. The Suffolk Punch is critically endangered, so welcoming more foals is crucial.”
Ian Pepper, a Trustee at The Suffolk Punch Trust, commented:
"Everyone at the Suffolk Punch Trust is hugely grateful to Penn Commercial for continuing to support us as a major sponsor.
"Having local businesses with us on our journey to conserve our wonderful, iconic Suffolk horses is both welcome and appreciated.
"Our partnership will help to ensure that future generations can also learn more about Suffolk heritage, whilst enjoying our 'gentle giants'.''
The Suffolk Punch Trust was founded to help protect the critically endangered Suffolk horse through its established breeding programme, raising public awareness and training a new generation of professionals to work with these iconic heavy horses.
After several years’ restoration work and the construction of a purpose-built Visitor Centre, The Suffolk Punch Trust opened to the public in 2010. The 120-acre site celebrates the history of the farm, its horses and rural Suffolk life and puts The Suffolk Punch Trust – home of the Hollesley Bay Colony Stud – firmly on the tourist map, attracting some 50,000 visitors per year.
The Trust also showcases many rare Suffolk breeds, such as Red Poll cattle, and also provides a popular petting area with smaller livestock, such as goats and guinea pigs, alongside its amazing Suffolk Punches.
