Penn Commercial has been chosen as sole agent for the sale of St Clement's Congregational Church on Back Hamlet, Ipswich by client, the University of Suffolk.
The Gothic-style former church, designed by William Eade, is being sold by the University of Suffolk, which purchased the building in 2021, with plans to use it for student facilities. However, the University has since reviewed its estate plans and would like to find another use for the historic building.
Rosanne Wijnberg, Chief Operating and Transformation Officer at the University of Suffolk, said:
"We have reviewed a number of options for using the former church, and it no longer falls within our future estate plans.
"We believe the best option is to offer another organisation in Ipswich the opportunity to restore the building to its former glory."
Rachael Jackson of Penn Commercial commented:
“We are delighted to be bringing such an imposing and historically significant building to the market for sale.
“The site is in a favourable location, directly next to the University of Suffolk Campus, and close to the town centre, as well as to the popular Waterfront. It offers a large site for potential car parking – when fully landscaped – and could be attractive as a community hub or public amenity space.”
The former church was granted Grade II Listed status in 2023, meaning that its original interior, including the wooden pews, must be preserved.
As well as the main congregational area, the building includes a meeting room, kitchen and a large parking area.
The church has not been used for worship since around 2017, and is historically associated with the Grimwade family, which owned the large department store on Ipswich’s Cornhill.
The former church is being marketed for freehold sale with a guide price of around £300,000.
