Penn Commercial celebrates first year's sponsorship of The Suffolk Punch Trust

Penn Commercial has celebrated its first year as a major sponsor of The Suffolk Punch Trust with a donation of £1,000 at its site at Hollesley, outside Woodbridge, on 23rd August 2023.

Under the sponsorship deal, signed in July 2022, Penn supports The Trust as its corporate charity for 12 months, donating £15 for every commercial property transaction carried out during that time.

Vanessa Penn, Managing Director of Penn Commercial, said:

“We are really pleased to have been able to sponsor to The Suffolk Punch Trust over the past year. We were looking for a smaller local good cause to support, as a small independent business ourselves, and we have seen the extensive investment and development work that The Trust has been carrying out over this time, helping to grow visitor numbers and generate additional funds for the horses.

“We are also proud to announce that we will extending our sponsorship of The Suffolk Punch Trust for a further 12 months. The charity has had a fruitful year, with new foals and, most recently, winning a number of major category prizes at the prestigious Suffolk Show, and we can’t wait to see what exciting developments the coming year will bring!”

The Suffolk Punch Trust was founded to help protect the critically endangered Suffolk horse through its established breeding programme, raising public awareness and training a new generation of professionals to work with these iconic heavy horses.

The day-to-day costs of running The Suffolk Punch Trust are considerable:

Hay/feed/bedding fees per year: £28,151

Veterinary fees per year: £11,935

Farrier fees per year: £7,428

1 bale of Hesston hay every 1½ weeks per horse: £40

1 bale of straw every week per horse: £25

1 bag of food every 2 weeks per horse: £25

1 trim every 6 weeks per horse: £35

Pair of front shoes every 6 weeks per horse: £85

Sonja Moon, Visitor Centre Manager at The Suffolk Punch Trust, commented:

"The support of businesses such as Penn Commercial is vital to continue breeding the Suffolk Punch horses. These wonderful horses help to shape the landscape of East Anglia and developed farming throughout the Eastern Counties.

"We appreciate all that Penn Commercial have done for us over the last year and look forward to their continued support next year."

After several years’ restoration work and the construction of a purpose-built Visitor Centre, The Suffolk Punch Trust opened to the public in 2010. It celebrates the history of the farm, its horses and rural Suffolk life and puts The Suffolk Punch Trust – home of the Hollesley Bay Colony Stud firmly on the tourist map.

In addition to the Suffolk Punch horses, the 120-acre Hollesley site offers a range of visitor attractions, including a café, gift shop, Heritage Museum, Pets’ Paddock, a children’s play area and the Suffolk Heritage Garden, which holds a ‘National Collection’ status.
