Penn Commercial celebrates second year's sponsorship of The Suffolk Punch Trust

Penn Commercial has celebrated its second year as a major sponsor of The Suffolk Punch Trust, with a donation of £1,000 at the charity's site at Hollesley, outside Woodbridge, on 25th September 2024.

Under the sponsorship deal, signed in July 2022, Penn supports The Trust as its corporate charity for 12 months, donating £15 for every commercial property transaction carried out during that time.

The Suffolk Punch Trust was founded to help protect the critically endangered Suffolk horse through its established breeding programme, raising public awareness and training a new generation of professionals to work with these iconic heavy horses.

Vanessa Penn, Managing Director of Penn Commercial, said:

“The Suffolk Punch horse is one of the emblems of our county, and we are proud to support The Suffolk Punch Trust’s important work in preserving this historic heavy-horse breed for generations to come.

“With four new foals and a number of prestigious prizes in 2024, including at the Suffolk Show, the Trust continues to go from strength to strength, and we know that our donation will be put to good use in the maintenance and upkeep of these magnificent Suffolk horses.”

The day-to-day costs of running The Suffolk Punch Trust are considerable:

  • £5 would buy a sack of carrots, a water bucket, bandages, a hoof pick or a lead rope
  • £10 would buy a mane and tail brush, a medium hay net or corn broom
  • £20 would buy a large hay net, a body brush, five litres of shampoo or some shoulder-length gloves
  • £30 would buy medication, a five-prong fork or some wormer
  • £40 would buy a straw bale, some vitamins or oil supplement
  • £50 would buy hexoscrub, 100 adhesive dressings or a hay bale
  • £60 would buy a wheelbarrow or cover a vet callout charge
  • £70 would buy five litres of fly spray, boxes of medication or indoor water
  • £100+ would buy a two-wheel wheelbarrow, automatic water troughs, hay ring feeders, medication, treatments or many other day-to-day items that the Trust uses

Ian Pepper, a Trustee at The Suffolk Punch Trust, commented:

"The whole Team at the Suffolk Punch Trust are hugely grateful to Penn Commercial for your kind and generous donation, which will help us continue our work at Hollesley. We are proud of our continued association with your business.

“The Suffolk Punch is an iconic stalwart of Suffolk tradition and our aim is to ensure that these wonderful horses continue to thrive and can be seen and enjoyed by future generations.

“It is the generosity and support of our corporate friends and the general public, who enable the Trust to pursue our aim of saving our colony of Suffolk Punch horses.”

The Trust costs many thousands of pounds to run and it is funded through a combination of sponsorships, donations, legacies, admission fees and events run by its dedicated team and friends, who share its desire to keep the Suffolk Punch breed going.

After several years’ restoration work and the construction of a purpose-built Visitor Centre, The Suffolk Punch Trust opened to the public in 2010. It celebrates the history of the farm, its horses and rural Suffolk life and puts The Suffolk Punch Trust – home of the Hollesley Bay Colony Stud – firmly on the tourist map, attracting some 50,000 visitors per year.

In addition to the Suffolk Punch horses, the 120-acre Hollesley site offers a range of visitor attractions, including a café, gift shop, Heritage Museum, Pets’ Paddock, a children’s play area and the Suffolk Heritage Garden, which holds a ‘National Collection’ status.

The Trust also showcases many rare Suffolk breeds, such as Red Poll cattle, alongside its amazing ‘gentle giants’ – the Suffolk Punches themselves.
